puclab – Pilot

Make an appointment for preliminary tests in our pilot plant.

We give you and your product as much time as needed. Together with your technicians/engineers, we determine the best possible configuration for your new PUC machine in our test lab and plan its integration into your process.

puclab – On-Site

Test a PUC mill in your plant or laboratory.

Talk to our technical support to define the requirements for your process and product. We then provide you with a suitable machine, free of charge, and offer support for your in-house trials.

puclab – Remote

Send us your raw materials for testing.

Based on your specifications and materials, we determine the best machine configuration for your end product in our technical centre. Using different grinder sets and settings, we can calculate within a few hours how your new PUC mill needs to be configured, without charge.

Probst & Class Colloid Mill EL

Colloid mills from Probst & Class for processing collagen

Colloid mills are used both in the extraction of collagen from animal tissues and in their processing. As in other applications in the processing industry, colloid mills are used to grind materials finely and to emulsify, disperse and homogenise different phases.

Raw materials used in processing collagen

  • Raw collagen - from animal tissues (skin, bones, tendons, etc.)
  • Water - for pretreating and extracting collagen from the raw material.
  • Process-supporting chemicals: acids and bases support the remodelling and extraction of the raw collagen.

Collagen-processing procedure

The pretreated collagen solution is fed into the colloid mill. The collagen is further comminuted by mechanical shear, pressure and frictional forces, which is important for the fineness and consistency of the collagen particles.

The processing of collagen is normally limited to a maximum temperature, as otherwise the proteins begin to deteriorate. For this reason, we offer special double-walled housings and funnels for better temperature control in the processing of collagen.

Filtration and purification: Collagen is often filtered and purified to remove unwanted particles and impurities after processing in colloid mills. Concentration and drying: Purified collagen is concentrated and dried to obtain collagen powder. PUC does not offer its own machines for these final steps, although we will be happy to advise you on the selection of a suitable supplier.

Typical end products

Typical end products for the pharmaceutical industry are wound healing products, collagen injections and joint supplements.

Typical end products for the cosmetics industry include skin creams, anti-ageing products and hair and beauty products.

In-line or batch operation

Processing and production can be carried out in Probst & Class mills and systems in a batch process or in a continuous in-line process, depending on requirements. We also offer in-line deaeration systems for the extraction of air or other gases. This step is particularly beneficial before packaging in order to achieve a clean environment and optimise the properties of the product. We will be happy to advise you as to the advantages and disadvantages of the processes and of system integration. Please send us an enquiry for our PUClab service.

Probst & Class as a supplier to the cosmetics industry

Probst & Class mills have been used in state-of-the-art processing in the cosmetics industry for 80 years. With a PUC machine, both small and large industrial groups produce high quality cosmetics. The high manufacturing quality of PUC machines usually ensures a service life of several decades. The supply of spare and wear parts even for very early models guarantees a safe investment and low total cost of ownership.

Find your ideal machine, reliably and quickly

In the almost 100-year history of Probst & Class, there is one constant: Practically every end product needs its own individual machine configuration!

What has been part of our success for decades is now a strategy. We call this strategy puclab.

puclab is more than a development lab

  • System consulting: Holistic concepts for the construction of new systems and the conversion of systems to other products
  • Outsourced R&D for our customers' wet grinding, mixing and degassing processes
  • Preliminary trials to help decide on the optimal process
  • Further development of processes in case of changed specifications
  • Application database with test set-ups, test results and videos
